Today was the 2 week check up for the boys. Not much to report...I guess that's a good thing. Both of the boys are healthy in every aspect. We were concerned a little bit about the fact that Kevin was sleeping in the swing instead of sleeping of in his bassinet. So that was about the only question we had for the doctor. She gave us the whole speech about babies laying on flat hard mattresses. Then said that the only way she could get one of her kids to sleep was in a car seat. So that made us feel a lot better about having him sleeping in the swing.
The doctor did say that although you can't spoil babies this young, it is possible for them to learn. She suggested letting them try to cry themselves to sleep in the bassinet, as a way to learn how to sooth themselves. So I think we will give it a try and see how that goes.
Both boys are growing good. They are both now 20 inches long. Surprisingly Alex has the bigger head now, even though its only by .3 cm. Alex is also catching up to Kevin in weight. Alex is 7 pounds 3 ounces, and Alex is 7 pounds and 14 ounces. They are in the 8th & 19th percentile respectively. I was kinda surprised to see that 11 ouces makes that big of a difference in the percentile. Of course like the doctor said, twins are expected to be low on the percentile like they are and that the important thing is that both are growing well.

Nipples
I guess this post is about a week late, but as expected there has not been time to write many posts...
Well it took a week or so, but we finally discovered last week why Kevin refused to eat out of the Avent bottles that we were using. For the first few days he was home when we tried to give him a Avent bottle he would just shake his head and refuse to drink from it. Luckily we had 1 Gerber bottle sitting around. It was a big bottle for an older kid, that we only had because we used it for the Jelly Bean counting contest at the baby shower. Kevin would drink just fine out of that bottle so we just had to keep cleaning and reusing that bottle for the first few days. Alex would eat of of some nipples and not others, but we could not figure out why. So we just kept putting the ones that he wouldn't eat from off to the side, and cleaned and reused the few that he seamed OK with.
When we got out of the house for the first time we went to Target we decided to take a look at the Avent nipples to see if we could find other ones that might work better since all of our bottles were Avent. Looking at the nipples at the store we discovered that on the back of them there is a number ( 1- 5 ). The #1 nipples come with the newborn sized bottles and the #2s came with bigger bottles . For some reason the boys just hate the #1s. So we bought a few more #2s and skipped over the #1s all together. Now they eat great.

Sleeping
Its nice to have Alex off of the Oxygen monitors now. Its made for much better sleeping the last few nights. Instead of waking up to check on the boys every 15-20 minutes we can get a couple hours of sleep at a time. We get up and feed them around 10, 2, and 6, but outside of that they have not been waking up too much. Of course there is still the occasional poopy diaper in the middle of the night that will wake them up.
Alex sleeps so good. He really just wakes up to eat and poop. Occasionally he will wake up just and just look around for a while, but never does he get too fussy when he wakes up. The only time he really gets mad is bath time and when there are a bunch of people around. When our nieces and nephews ( most are 4 and under ) come over they all want to talk to and try to hold the kids, and Alex really doesn't like that. He gets a little upset at all of the commotion and noise.
Kevin on the other hand seams like if he's awake he thinks that means he needs food or at the very least some attention. Since Kevin is a little attention lover he does pretty well when other people are around. Of course they both still spit up a bit so when they are moved around a lot during the day when there is company around they both spit up a bit in the evening then. At night he won't sleep in the bassinet at all. We have started putting the swing in the bedroom and letting him sleep there, without turning it on.

Spoke too soon
I guess I spoke too soon about the spitting up. From the feeding after the last post(where I said they stopped spitting up), until today they spit up at nearly every feeding. Now today they have been doing better again. But I'm not going to make the mistake of saying that the spitting up has stopped again.

Spitting Up
Well things have gotten much better recently with the spit up. Over the last couple of days both of the boys were very good when it comes to spitting up. The first few days it seamed like they were spitting up all of the time. The first couple of nights we had to change out the pads and sheets in the bassinets because they were so soaked through with spit up. The last 2 nights they did not spit up at all. We are starting to think that the problem was just that their stomaches were not quite ready when they were born. I'm sure I've jinxed it now, but I think we are over the days of big spit ups.
Of course Kevin still refuses to sleep in his bassinet. After the first feeding when going to bed last night he was really crabby. I ended up taking him in the living room and sleeping with him on the recliner until the next feeding. Then after the second feeding the only way we could get him to sleep was to move the swing into our bedroom and let him swing instead of laying in the bassinet.
And daddy was very sassy last night. Alex started to get real whinny last at about 5:30 this morning and we had just feed them a little after 4AM. So I walked with him for a while and then ended up sitting up on the chair and that was the only way he would sleep. If I tried to recline then he would start crying. Then at 8AM it was time for their next feeding. So I went to change Alex's diaper. It turned out that he had filled his pants pretty good. And it was starting to get crusty on his leg. I felt so bad because I'm sure that was why he woke up crying at 5:30...not that he was fussy, but rather that he needed to be changed. You would think I would have learned by now to check that when they wake up crying in the middle of the night...I'll try to remember that next time.

Kevin doesn't like to sleep...at night that is
Kevin seams to have his days and nights really mixed up. He is sound asleep now, but every night from about 10 or 11 until 6 or so in the morning he just doesn't want to sleep. Last night I tried everything: I rocked him, I walked with him, I put him in the swing. Finally Jamie let him sleep on her chest out in our recliner and he seamed to like that, but I'm sure Jamie was not too comfortable. Then we got up for their first feeding this morning, and it was hard to get him to stay awake long enough to eat the whole bottle. And he has been sleeping good ever since. I guess this is why people say you should sleep when the kids sleep. Maybe I should stop playing WoW and get some sleep.

The Swing
Kevin has been really fussy the last couple of days. It seams like the only way to get him to sleep was to hold him tight. Even that didn't work sometimes, many times it required swaying him. So Jamie's mom got the boys an easter present a little bit early. She bought the boys a swing. Kevin loves the swing. When he gets fussy we can just put him in and let him swing, and after only a couple of minutes he will be sleeping. Alex just loves to sit in the bouncy seat ( without it bouncing that is ) and he will fall asleep. A week old and already they have distinct personalities.

A week already
It does not seam like little Kevin and Alex were a week old yesterday at all. All of the days and nights have just melted together into one big blur. I knew we were not going to have much time to write entries here, but I never thought it would be this long between entries. Well it didn't help that the hospital has free wifi only available during business hours so after the last entry I couldn't get on the internet until we got home.
Kevin continues to do well. They had us go in for a check up for both of the boys on Wednesday, and Kevin had gained some weight since leaving the hospital and was almost back up to his birth weight already which is really good. Now if we can just get him to learn the appropriate times to sleep. He sleeps so good during the daytime, but at night he gets really cranky. During the day he will sleep just fine just about anywhere we put him. However at night the only way I can seam to get him to sleep is to pick him up, hold him tight, and walk around the house. One lap at a decent pace, then a second walking kinda slow and he will usually fall asleep. Sometimes that doesn't work and the other trick I've found is holding him and rocking him to mimic the motion of a swing. The nurses in the nursery said the easiest way to calm him down at night was to put him in the swing, so maybe it will be time for us to look into investing in a swing.
Alex is doing much better now. He had a couple of dusky spells in the hospital that really gave us a good scare. I don't think I have ever felt as scared as I did when Jamie was holding Alex and he started to turn a little blue. We buzzed for the nurses and they came in and took care of him. Thank god it we saw it at the hospital though, because if we were to see that for the first time at home it would be crazy tough. Now that we have seen it at the hospital I think we will be OK to handle the situation should it arise at home. That last dusky spell was Friday Night at the hospital and he has not had another since, so we are feeling pretty good about his health now.
Alex still spits up quite a bit. However when I think about taking care of some of our nieces there were times when I think they spit up just as much as Alex does. At the Doctor's visit on Wednesday Alex was all healthy except for the fact that he had not gained any weight since he left the hospital. The doctor said that at this stage babies should be gaining back about 1 oz per day and this was now on day 2 out of the hospital. So they had us bring him back in for a second weight check yesterday. Overnight Wednesday night he did not spit up at all, and he gained 4 oz at his check up. So the doctor said that he was healthy at this point and would not need to come in until his 2 week check up.
After going all night Wednesday night without spitting up at all I was quite excited. The first 2 nights he spit up so much that we needed to change him a couple of times at night and rotate the pad in his bassinet so that he would not be sleeping in spit up. Then last night he was right back to spitting up the way he did the first 2 nights. I'm not sure but at this point my theory is that he was insisting on eating too frequently. They are both very good eaters...we have been feeding then 2.5-3 oz every 4 hours. Then starting at about 4PM yesterday Alex decided he wanted to eat that much ever 3 hours instead. I think he started spitting up then last night and this morning because his little belly just couldn't handle all of the that. I'm sure there are still some tricks we need to learn, but right now it seams like feeding him every 3 was the only way to get him to go back to sleep at night. When he woke up I would change him and try to walk, rock, swing, etc to get him to go back to sleep, but in the end the only thing that would calm him down was feeding him. Note to self: maybe only make him 2 oz bottles at night.
Everybody kept telling us how little sleep we were going to get once the kids were born. In the last couple of days I have found out that everything I was told in no way actually describes the lack of sleep. We came home with the boys on Monday, and Tuesday I was so tired that I think I nearly fell a sleep walking around during the day. Then the last 2 days we have been out and about with the boys. Taking them to the doctor and visiting some peoples. So all of that just shot down the idea that everybody says "sleep while the babies sleep". I do find it quite useful to get in naps while the babies are sleeping, however I also find it quite difficult to do so. The amount of laundry and dishes that I have done in the last few days far exceeds the amount of laundry and dishes that I have done in the last couple of months combined.
Jamie is doing better everyday. However she is still very much in recovery mode. So I think it will be nice for her to get some time today to stay home and not lug the boys anywhere. From what we have been hearing it sounds like a week or so after the c-section she should start to feel better, but I'm sure it will be quite a while after that before she really feels back to normal ( although now with 2 kids I'm sure normal is not what it was before ). I'm sure the car ride home didn't help how she feels either. They made Jamie climb in the back seat in between the two car seats to ride with the boys. Now I can see if there is only one child how that might be a good idea. But there are two, and she just had a c-section. They told her she can't do things like driving and walking up/down stairs because it will stretch out the wound...well how does crawling over car seats not stretch things even more than that. Luckily we live relatively close to the hospital so it wasn't a long car ride home.
It feels good to be home as a full family, especially after there was thoughts that Alex may not be able to come home right away. All the cute little faces they make and pig squeals that come from them easily out weighs all of the tiredness. It used to take computer games and TV to keep me entertained, now I can just sit and watch them sleep for hours. In fact that sounds like fun, I think I'll go watch some right now.

Day 2
Well after a pretty crazy first day ( or half day really cause the kids were born at noon on Thursday ) the second day turned out to be just as crazy.
Kevin spent the good majority of the day with us. He left for a little while to do some routine checks on him, and the nurse offered to let him sleep in the nursery for a little while since Jamie was sleeping. So I let Jamie get a nap for a couple of hours while Kevin got checked out and got to take a nap in the nursery.
Kevin is a little bit of a spitter. The nurses said that he had a tendency to spit up shortly after eating. When I fed him in the afternoon he didn't spit up at all. Then after about half an hour I changed him, and all the shaking up must have been too much for his little belly and he spit up then. Then at the last feeding before brining him to the nursery for the night he ate and spit up just a tiny little bit while eating, but no real spit up. Kevin got his circumcision yesterday and everything went well with that. So Kevin is a very healthy little boy.
Alex is still having a tough time adjusting to the world out side of mommy's belly. His oxygen levels had been holding steady all afternoon so they brought him into the room for a short visit yesterday. It was a little nerve racking to see him still hooked up on the monitors and having the nurse hook up the oxygen on the wall so that she could just pop it on him if they needed. But his short visit turned into a couple of hours that we got to spend together as a whole family. And never in those two hours was he in need of the oxygen. In fact he has not had to be on oxygen at all since his episode Thursday evening. They have been keeping him in the nursery all this time because he spits up a lot. Even when not eating. That was the reason that we let him go back to the nursery last night. Before they brought him into us the feed him and let the food settle for a while then brought him in. He didn't spit up the whole time then a few hours latter he started to spit up, and when spit up it was a lot. So we had the nurses take him back to the nursery. They said they want to watch him real close right now so that when he spits they can clear it out right away to ensure that it doesn't block off anything and cause the oxygen levels to drop again. It was only a couple of hours and we weren't allowed to take Alex out of his crib, but it was a wonderful feeling to have the whole family together for that little bit of time.
The doctor's still haven't been able to find anything wrong with Alex. They did some more x-rays to ensure that he wasn't inhaling anything that he spit up, and Alex is doing a good job with that. They also did some more blood work to check for infections and viruses and everything there came back good as well. At this point the thought is one of three things. They are leaning towards the problem being just a transitional thing that he will grow out of. However there is also the possibility that he has either acid reflux, or that he is lactose intolerant. At this point he made it through the night without setting off any alarms so they are talking about letting him come in the room with us today, which will give us the chance to feed him for the first time. Hopefully this is a sign that he is starting to come around now.

Happy Birthday Kevin and Alex
The boys are finally here!!!
What an exciting day. I can't even begin to explain the feelings that went on yesterday. Everything went well. And everybody is now relatively healthy.
Baby A ( now known as Kevin ) was breech so they had to do a c-section. The surgery went very well. The doctors came in a got Jamie around Noon yesterday. Then they made me sit and wait till almost 12:25 before they came to bring me into the operating room. Luckily Favre's press conference was on so that was able to take my mind off of things just a little bit. It felt like we were in surgery forever, but the boys were born at 12:31 and 12:32 so really it was less than 10 minutes. Then it took until about 12:45 to finish sewing Jamie back up and we were in the room to hear the lullabies played at 1Pm.
Kevin Joseph came first and is he bigger of the two. He is 6lbs 8oz and 19 1/4 inches long. Kevin spent all day with us yesterday. He was very good getting passed around all day and never got fussy. We let him sleep in the nursery overnight, and brought him back in the room today.
Alex James was 5 lbs 13 oz and 18 1/2 inches. He spent the first hour with us yesterday. Then when they checked his vitals his respiratory rate was a little high. So they took him to the nursery and he has not been back with us yet. He has had his oxygen level drop a little bit a few times throughout the evening yesterday. Then at 6:45 he had an episode where he turned blue and the oxygen level dropped very low. He was given some oxygen and has now recovered pretty well. He is still in the nursery though, because he has also been spitting up a lot. The nurses want to keep a close watch on him to make sure everything is ok. They did blood work and a couple of x-rays and everything came back good. So at this point we are just hoping that it is simply a transitional thing that he needs to adjust to his new world. We are hoping that Alex is able to at least come visit us sometime tonight. The nurses say that Alex is doing much better today than he was yesterday so thats a good sign. And we know he's in good hands in the nursery so I'm not going to push the issue...we'll leave it up to the doctors/nurses to decide when he's ready to come into the room.
Jamie's doing pretty good too. She was pretty nauseous all day yesterday. She got sick a few times, but by 6PM she was doing pretty good with that too. Today the anesthesia wore off so she's been in a bit of pain. They gave her some more pain medicine and she seams to be handling it well. She's sleeping now to try and catch up a little. Of course with a c-section she was being poked, prodded and tested all night long so she couldn't get a real good nights sleep.
As I finish writing this the nurse just came in and said that she was ready to bring Alex in for a visit. But Jamie is sleeping so I guess I'll wait a little bit longer so that she can be awake when they bring him in.
Since we have internet access in the room here I'll try to post pretty often in the next few days to keep everybody up to date on what's going on.
